Problem

A fast-growing Australian cosmetics brand was experiencing significant issues with the performance and scalability of its eCommerce platform, built on WordPress with WooCommerce. Hosted on a high-cost, fixed-tier plan with a managed WordPress provider, the site struggled to handle growing daily traffic — reaching tens of thousands of visitors — especially during promotional peaks like Black Friday.

Performance bottlenecks in the web and database layers led to degraded user experience and risked lost sales. Additionally, the hosting costs were disproportionately high compared to the level of service delivered.

Solution

We conducted a full migration of the client’s WordPress-based eCommerce platform to Amazon Web Services (AWS), designing and implementing a fault-tolerant, highly available, and horizontally scalable architecture. The infrastructure was built in accordance with AWS best practices, ensuring elasticity and global scalability for future international expansion.

Given certain service limitations in the Australia region (e.g., AWS Elastic File System not being available at the time), custom workarounds were developed to preserve performance and compatibility. The new architecture featured distributed layers for web and database services, auto-scaling groups, managed storage solutions, and a design tailored to withstand traffic surges and minimize downtime.

Outcomes

The new AWS-based infrastructure significantly improved the platform’s reliability, speed, and cost-efficiency. The website successfully handled its highest ever traffic volumes — over 50,000 visitors per day — during Black Friday, without any performance degradation or service interruptions. At the same time, the client reduced their infrastructure costs by more than 50% compared to the previous hosting provider.

Beyond enhanced stability and scalability, the new setup gave the client the flexibility to expand globally and launch new regional eCommerce stores with confidence.
